What is Sri Lankan BPO Industry

What is BPO?
Outsourcing is the delegation of work from an organization/company to a service provider company, where the service provider company typically carries out the same work cheaper and more effectively than the company which is outsourcing. Companies outsource work primarily to gain cost advantages, efficiencies and expertise.
Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) is the act of transferring some of an organization's repeated business processes to an outside service provider to achieve cost reductions while improving service quality. The outsourced business process can be a core or a non core function to the company.
With the advancement of information communication technology, outsourcing has become a global megatrend. The BPO industry potential is estimated to be a staggering 150 billion US dollars, which only a fraction of this is actually being outsourced. Counties like India and Philippines have created millions of jobs in BPO sector.

Typical areas of work in a BPO

While almost anything can be outsourced, several key industries are leading the outsourcing wave, and in response to this, BPO companies have begun to specialize in these areas.
Following are some of the key areas:Medical Transcriptions, Financial Analysis, Finance & Accounting, Investment Research, Customer Service, Travel, Insurance, Banking, Logistics, Manufacturing, Retail, Healthcare, Legal, Engineering.
As you can see from the above list, there is a wide spectrum of work areas that a BPO company could be engaged in. Typically, a BPO company will focus on few business process areas to build competencies. Depending on the focus area of the company, the work in a BPO can vary from providing customer support (e.g. answering customer calls), processing transactions (e.g. processing insurance claims), to high end research (e.g. investment research).

What are the skills required for getting in to a BPO

Skills required to get in to a BPO can vary from just having good communication and analytics skills, OL/ALs to MBA’s & PhDs. The skills requirement varies significantly from company to company based on what business process they provide for the clients. It is almost better to find out a company that matches your skills than getting trained in to get in to a BPO. The good news is that, many BPO companies have broken down the business processes in a way that even people with little or no skills can get quickly trained to work in these companies.
Generally, it helps to have some level of computer skills (the ability to operate a computer), communication skills, especially in English and skills to work in a team environment. As such, with basic level of skills many people can get a good job in a BPO company.
The Higher end BPOs, also called KPOs (Knowledge Process Outsourcing) generally requires a specialized skills. For example, accounting and finance, investment research and engineering related BPOs typically require high-end skills such as a degree is specific area or a trade certification. These BPOs attract people who are typically already working in a related field in other companies or people who study for specialized degrees.
Many companies also make a significant investment in training employees on an off the job to help people get in to their companies and to advance in their careers.

How to get a job in BPO Company in Sri Lanka?

BPO is a fast growing vibrant sector of employment in Sri Lanka. Many global and local BPO companies have operations in Sri Lanka. WNS, TimeX BPO, Office Tiger, HSBC Data Processing Limited, Amba Research, Aviva are few of the leading companies.
All most, all the BPO companies hire people though out the year and the best way is to approach the company direct. Most of the companies, have information and instructions on how to apply on their web sites (www.ITpro.lk Company Directory will soon carry a list of companies to help you directly apply for a job).
Increasingly, BPO companies are also focusing on career fairs and special hiring events to recruit people. Some companies, will do walk-in-interviews at these events and it pays for you to come prepared with a CV. You may even walk out with a job!

BPO Project of Panamura Nenasala

Business process outsourcing (BPO) contains the transmission of processes along with the associated operational activities and responsibilities, to a third party with at least a guaranteed equal service level and where the client contains a firm grip over the (activities of the) vendor for mutual long term success. BPO is positively related to the search for more efficient organizational designs: cost reduction, productivity growth and innovative capabilities. Hence, a source for strategic advantage.
Traditionally, BPO is undertaken by manufacturing firms. For instance Coca Cola, where almost the entire supply chain is outsourced and the company is essentially becoming a marketing organization.[1] However, BPO is nowadays rapidly conquering the service oriented firms as well. A well-known example is provided by the Bank of America, who outsourced their entire HR function to Exult, one of the leading Human Resources BPO vendors.[2]
BPO is often divided into two categories: back office outsourcing, which includes internal business functions such as billing or purchasing, and front office outsourcing, which includes customer-related services such as marketing or tech support. The endless opportunities IT provides, stimulates (cross-border) BPO activities. BPO that is contracted outside a company's own country is sometimes called
offshore outsourcing. BPO that is contracted to a company's neighboring country is sometimes called nearshore outsourcing.
Use of a BPO as opposed to an application service provider (ASP) usually also means that a certain amount of risk is transferred to the company that is running the process elements on behalf of the outsourcer. BPO includes the software, the process management, and the people to operate the service, while a typical ASP model includes only the provision of access to functionalities and features provided or 'served up' through the use of software, usually via web browser to the customer. BPO is a part of the outsourcing industry. It is dependent on information technology, hence it is also referred to as information technology enabled services or ITES. Knowledge process outsourcing and legal process outsourcing are some of the subsets of business process outsourcing.

How add Sinharajaya for the New Seven Wonders of the World

New Seven Wonders of the World is a project that attempts to revive the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World concept with a list of modern wonders. A popularity poll was organized by the private New 7 Wonders Foundation, with winners announced on July 7, 2007 in Lisbon, Portugal.[1]The Swiss-based non-governmental, non-profit foundation[not in citation given] New 7 Wonders Foundation claims more than 100 million votes were cast through the Internet or by telephone. Since nothing prevented fans, government or tourism agencies from casting multiple votes, the poll is considered "decidedly unscientific".[2] According to John Zogby, founder and current President/CEO of the Washington-based polling organization Zogby International, New 7 Wonders Foundation drove “the largest poll on record”.[1]The New 7 Wonders Foundation, established in 2001, is committed to investing 50% of excess revenue in global good causes related to monument preservation and reconstruction. It has relied on private donations, the sale of merchandise such as shirts and cups, and revenue from selling broadcasting rights to obtain funds.[3]The program drew a wide range of official reaction. Some countries touted their finalist and tried to get more votes cast for it, while others downplayed or criticized the contest.[2][1] After supporting the New 7 Wonders Foundation at the beginning of the campaign, with providing advice on nominee selection, UNESCO has distanced itself from the undertaking in 2007. [4] [5] Many monuments were supported by dedicated websites or strong placements on national websites. National figures and celebrities promoted the New 7 Wonders campaign in many countries. [6]
New 7 Wonders
This project offered the public the opportunity to vote for the new seven wonders of the world. Results were announced on 7 July 2007.

Advantage of BPO

An important aspect of business process outsourcing is its ability to free corporate executives from some of their day-to-day process management responsibilities. Once a process is successfully outsourced, they get more time to, explore new revenue streams, accelerate other projects, and focus on their customers.
By outsourcing their back office operations to third world countries, companies have the following advantages:
Achieve cost reductions – this is made possible through process improvements, reengineering, and use of technologies that reduce and bring administrative and other costs under control.
Key in on company's main business – with the day-to-day back office operations taken care of, the management is free to impart more time to building the company's core businesses
Obtain outside expertise – Rather than recruiting and training personnel, BPO ensures that domain experts from another company provide the needed guidance and skills.
Meet constantly changing customer demands – many BPO vendors provide the management with flexible and scalable services to meet the customers’ changing requirements, and to support company acquisitions, consolidations, and joint ventures
Achieving revenue increases – by outsourcing non-core processes, companies can focus on increasing their sales and marketshare, develop new products, expand into new markets, and enhance customer service and satisfactions.

What is BPO Industry

BPO is the act of transferring some of an organization's repeated non-core and core business processes to an outside provider to achieve cost reductions while improving service quality. Because the processes are repeated and a long-term contract is used, outsourcing goes far beyond the use of consultants. If done well, BPO results in increasing shareholder value. The main difference between BPO and more traditional IT outsourcing is that BPO offers companies a way of achieving transformational outcomes much more quickly. In a typical BPO contract, a service provider takes over a specific corporate function. Effective BPO encompasses much more than just changing who is responsible for performing the process. In BPO, the outside provider not only takes on the responsibility to manage the function or business process, but also re-engineers the way the process has been traditionally done.
The next generation of Business Process Outsourcing has emerged as a priority for businesses looking to better options in managing their application portfolios. The first wave offered low-cost, off-shore development labor, but today firms are demanding new, less risky options for applications that are strategic, complex, or mission-critical, while still taking cost into consideration. Outsourcing has moved from a niche technology management tool to a mainstream strategic weapon. Business Process Outsourcing leverages process driven efficiencies in terms of organizational excellence, responsiveness & branding, financial efficiency and customer relationship. BPO is emerging as a powerful and flexible approach that business leaders can use to achieve a wide range of tactical and strategic aims.
The most common business process that gets outsourced is call centers. Call centers and Help Desks of many multi national and fortune 500 companies are being outsourced to low waged, English speaking countries such as Philippines and India. Countries like India with vast IT human resources are also attracting outsourcing from American IT/Technology companies to outsource their IT Help Desks. Many of these help desks are state of the art with latest Help Desk software and help desk hardware with technical savvy IT graduates behind them answering your questions.

What is Panamura Nenasala

What is Nenasala
One aspect of the e-Sri Lanka initiative that the Agency will address is the current ICT infrastructure deficiencies in rural areas. A key objective of this programme is to establish multi-service community information centres, or Nenasala-s (Nenasala : meaning global knowledge centres), which provide access to Internet, telephones and other information services along with training etc. to the public in rural communities.
The central aim of Nenasala s is the delivery of positive economic, social and peace building impacts on a long term and sustainable basis. In the first phase of the current plan, it is estimated that around 500 Nenasala s will be created in North East and South regions by the end of 2007. Nenasala Support Institutions Nenasala s need managerial, logistical and technical support from institutions, which have professional expertise in the operations of community information centres. Nenasala initiatives will address the ‘to-build’ capacity of such Institutions, which will be known as Nenasala Support Institutions (Nenasala SI). As part of the planning process for the Nenasala implementation project, ICTA requested proposals from organisations that wish to establish themselves as Nenasala SIs. A mandatory criterion for a Full Service Nenasala SI was to submit a sub-proposal on how to set up a pilot Nenasala .
